Sag Harbor 6, North Fork 4

The Sag Harbor Whalers overcame a late ninth inning rally from the North Fork Ospreys to win their first game of the 2022 season by a final score of 6-4 on Saturday night.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings when the Whalers broke the tie in the top of the fourth scoring four runs. Cam Santeere (Rhode Island) started the scoring with an RBI single. The score would then become 2-0 in favor of the Whalers when Ike Kiely (Babson) scored on a double steal. An RBI single by CJ Dean (Cincinnati) and an Osprey error would make the later two runs in the inning for Sag Harbor.

Sag Harbor added another run in the top of the fifth when Billy Kender (Bucknell) hit an RBI single. Whalers starting pitcher Brett Borcherding (Rose-Hulman) had a no-hitter through the first four innings. Borcherding was taken out of the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth having walked his fifth batter of the game and his pitch count at 75.

Wyatt Benson (Hope International) came on with a runner on second for North Fork and one out. After the Ospreys moved the runner from second on a wild pitch by Benson, Connor Smalley (Franklin Pierce) hit an RBI groundout to give North Fork their first run of the game. Benson would get out of the inning with Sag Harbor still not allowing a hit.

Will Pacheco (Assumption) would be the new Whalers pitcher in the sixth inning and get the first two batters out. Pacheco would run into trouble allowing Mike Prisco (Albany) to walk and hitting Cole Resetar with a pitch. Asa Wilson (Pennsylvania) would then hit a single to left field for North Fork’s first hit of the night, however, a strong throw from left field by DJ Perron Jr (UMass Dartmouth) would nail Prisco at the plate to end the inning.

Both teams would get a run in the eighth inning. Sag Harbor got their run on a double by Sam Haney (St. Peter’s) while North Fork’s run came on a wild pitch.

Whalers reliever Vincent Corso (Richmond) came into the ninth for his second inning of work and got the first two Osprey batters out. North Fork would not go out quietly as Smalley hit a single to center field. Bobby Pollock (Farmingdale State) then hit a two-run home run cutting the deficit in half. A pair of Osprey singles would put the winning runs on base for the Ospreys.

Corso would then get Nic Adamo (Bucknell) to ground out to second base on the first pitch to give the Whalers their first win of the 2022 season.

Sag Harbor has their home opener on Sunday when they welcome the Riverhead Tomcats for a doubleheader at Mashashimuet Park. North Fork is back in action on Monday when they play the Westhampton Aviators at Cochran Park.

Shelter Island 3, Riverhead 1

The Shelter Island Bucks improved to 2-0 on the season defeating the Riverhead Tomcats by a score of 3-1 on Saturday at Fiske Field.

Shelter Island took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Conor Cooke (Brown).

The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Nicholas Papageorge (Brookdale CC) hit an RBI single with one out tying the score at 1-1.

Bucks 1B Blake Salamon (Northwood) would lead off the bottom of the seventh breaking the tie on the very first pitch with a solo home run which gave the Bucks back the lead.

Shelter Island would get an insurance run in the eighth inning from an RBI groundout by Matthew Wessels (Iona).

Bucks reliever Max Brulport (Stonehill) would have two Tomcat runners on with one out in the top of the ninth when he got Papageorge to groundout for a game ending 5-5-3 double play. Brulport pitched 3.1 innings of relief with six strikeouts earning the win.

Shelter Island’s starting pitcher Joey Kasper (Iona) hurled 5.2 shutout innings only allowing three hits while striking out six. Riverhead starter Jared Restmeyer (St. Rose) despite getting the loss had an impressive outing. Restmeyer went seven innings only allowing one earned run on the Salamon homer and striking out three with no walks.

Both teams play doubleheaders on Sunday with Shelter Island traveling to Westhampton and Riverhead going to Sag Harbor.
