Other 7/23 Games: Cox’s Late Hit Forces Tie at Sag Harbor
Riverhead 5, Sag Harbor 5 (10 Innings)
The Riverhead Tomcats got a two-out, two-run single from Brian Cox (Le Moyne) in the top of the ninth that ultimately resulted in a 5-5 tie with the Sag Harbor Whalers in ten innings.
The Tomcats held a 2-0 lead in the early innings of the game on RBI singles from Jackson Olson (Hartford) and Eddie Modica (LIU-Brooklyn).
The Whalers would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Calamari (Dartmouth) lead off the inning with a single and then Justin Lebek (Davidson) would tie the score with a two-run homer. An RBI single with two out from Jake Williams (SUNY New Paltz) would give Sag Harbor a 3-2 lead.
Sag Harbor would get a run in the fourth on a Calamari RBI single and a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Williams to lead 5-2.
Riverhead would cut the deficit to two runs on a solo shot from George Bell (Connors State) for his third home run of the season.
The Tomcats would get two men on base in the top of the ninth and with two out, Cox would come up to the plate with runners on second and third. Cox would rip a base hit to tie the game at 5-5 as the Tomcats had new life.
Kyle Martin (Fordham) would hold Sag Harbor scoreless in the bottom of the ninth. Riverhead would go down in order in the top of the tenth inning.
Martin in the bottom of the tenth would allow a single and a walk with two out bringing Kevin Buckley (St. John’s) to the plate with a chance to win the game for the Whalers.
Martin would get Buckley to strike out looking to end the game in a 5-5 tie.
Riverhead with the tie is now 19-18-2 for the season with 40 points. Riverhead is now tied with North Fork (20-19) for the third seed in the HCBL playoffs. North Fork currently holds the tiebreaker having won the season series with Riverhead 4-3.
Long Island 7, Westhampton 4
The Long Island Road Warriors clinched the #2 seed in the HCBL playoffs with a 7-4 victory over the Westhampton Aviators at Aviator Field on Sunday.
Westhampton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a solo homer by Nick Bottari (Southeastern).
Long Island would take the lead scoring three runs in the top of the fourth. Michael Veit (Fairleigh Dickinson) had a two-RBI single while Jeff Towle (Suffolk C.C.) brought him in on a single.
A sacrifice fly by Matt Hansen (Toledo) in the bottom of the fourth would cut the Road Warriors lead to 3-2.
Veit would add two more RBI in his total in the top of the fifth with another single for Long Island. The Road Warriors would have a 5-2 lead going into the middle of the fifth.
Cam Climo (UMass Lowell) would lead off the bottom of the fifth for Westhampton with a solo home run and then later Austin Kirkpatrick (LSU Eunice) would hit into an RBI fielder’s choice putting the Aviators once again within a run.
Long Island would respond with a Nick Grande (Stony Brook) RBI single in the top of the sixth. The Road Warriors would get an insurance run in the ninth inning on a Westhampton error.
Brandon LaManna (New Haven) would shut down Westhampton in the ninth to clinch Long Island “home field” in the semi-final round.
Matthew Paghidas (SUNY Maritime) went six innings to earn his second victory over Westhampton this season for Long Island.
Game 2: Southampton 8, North Fork 1
After being no-hit in the first game, Southampton responded by defeating the North Fork Ospreys by a final score of 8-1 in the nightcap of a home-and-home doubleheader.
Ryan McPhail (St. Edwards) was 3 for 3 for the Breakers with a double, stolen base and 4 RBI. Simon Whiteman (Yale) was 2 for 2 with four runs scored in the game.
Ian Clark (St. Mary’s (CA) got the win for Southampton going five innings allowing an unearned run on five hits in the game.
