Riverhead 6, Westhampton 4

The Westhampton Aviators 11 game-winning streak at Aviator Field ended on Saturday with a 6-4 loss to the Riverhead Tomcats. The victory by Riverhead ended their nine game losing streak as well which was tied for the longest losing streak in HCBL history.

Riverhead jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Benjamin Wanger (Yale), and a wild pitch. The Tomcats added to their lead in the fifth inning when Asher Lee-Tyson (Princeton) scored on an error.

Westhampton’s bats were befuddled by Chris Weiss (Hofstra) over the first six innings.  The Ridge, NY native held the potent Aviators lineup to just three hits.

Following Weiss’ departure, the Aviators bats came alive.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Aaron Ping (San Francisco) drove in Matt Dunlevy (Virginia Military Institute) to give Westhampton their first RBI of the ballgame. Trey Silvers (Lamar) and Jordan McCrum (Monmouth) each drove in RBI to tie the game at three.

In the ninth inning, Kiambu Fentress (Vanderbilt) and Anthony Lazar (Marist) scored on an error to give the Tomcats the lead.

Gavin Garay (St. John’s) drove in Lee-Tyson with two outs in the ninth to give Riverhead a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning.

Westhampton did get a run back with two out in the ninth on an RBI single from Ping. However, Kyle Mallwitz (Western Michigan) struck out Ross Puskarich (San Francisco) to end the ballgame.

Westhampton was handed their first home loss since Opening Day on June 3rd to North Fork. Riverhead's nine game losing streak prior to the win was tied for the longest losing streak in HCBL history with Westhampton back in 2012.

Montauk 6, Sag Harbor 4

The Montauk Mustangs now have a nine game winning streak following their come-from-behind 6-4 win over the Sag Harbor Whalers. Montauk has now won ten of their last eleven games dating back to June 19th.

Sag Harbor scored in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Jake Williams (SUNY New Paltz), and added to their lead in the third on a fielder’s choice from Oscar Marchena (UMass Lowell).

Jack Thompson (Georgia State) homered in the fourth inning to extend the Sag Harbor advantage to 3-0.

The Mustangs fought back in the sixth inning.  Just as they have done throughout their winning streak, Montauk found a way to score in key situation.

Nick Fanneron (Northeastern) started the scoring for Montauk with a two out RBI single. In the following at bat, Phil Capra (Wagner) belted his fourth home run of the year to tie the game at three.

Sag Harbor did come back to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning on a solo home run from Manny Ramirez Jr. (San Francisco).

But just as they did in the sixth inning, Montauk came back again, thanks to a three-run home run from Fanneron.

Jamie Galazin (St. John’s) earned his fourth save of the season to give Montauk their sixth straight home victory.

North Fork 19, Southampton 6

The North Fork Ospreys offense broke out with a season-high 19 runs in a 19-6 win over the Southampton Breakers.

North Fork’s offensive exploits started in the first inning.  Both Max Smith (UNLV) and Dan Schock (Sacred Heart) hit home runs, leading to six runs for the Ospreys.

Southampton took two runs back in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI’s from Bill Schich (Holy Cross) and Doug Trimble (Delaware), but another home run from Schock in the top of the second kept the Breakers behind by six runs.

During the fourth inning, the Ospreys scored eight runs to open up a 16-2 advantage. Smith started off the inning with his second home run of the contest.  Following an RBI double from Schock, Richard Palacios (Towson) clubbed a three run home run to further extend the Osprey lead.

Hayden Rappaport (Dartmouth) concluded North Fork’s scoring in the inning on a two run double.

North Fork concluded their scoring with runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings thanks to RBI from Rappaport, Tom Archer (Hofstra) and Sean Buckhout (Stony Brook).

Daniel Aguilo (SUNY Old Westbury) earned his fourth win of the summer for the Ospreys after surrendering two runs over five innings.
