SAG HARBOR 6, MONTAUK 0
In Tuesday’s showdown with Montauk, Sag Harbor lefthander Justin Thomas (Quinnipiac) was darn near unhittable. Thomas held the Mustangs without a hit for 8 1/3 innings, and although he fell short of the fifth no-hitter in league history, he did the lion’s share of work in the Whalers’ 6-0 win at Mashashimuet Park.
Drama built as Thomas retired the side in order in the eighth and even more so when Montauk’s Khalil Denson (Barry) flied out to start the ninth. However, the Mustangs’ Patrick Madigan (Northeastern) grounded a single between short and third to break up the no-hit bid, and when Nick Fanneron (Northeastern) followed with a single of his own, that closed the book on Thomas. Steven Barranca (College of Charleston) came in to face one hitter, inducing a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Thomas finished the night having given up two hits and three walks while striking out three. He fell two outs short of third in the history of the Whalers. Phil Klein (Youngstown State) threw a seven-inning perfect game against the Metro Cadets in 2008, and a year later, Tim Welch (Bowdoin) fired a seven-inning no-no against North Fork.
Sag Harbor grabbed a lead early when Dan Rizzie (Xavier) ripped an RBI single in the first, and two batters later, Joe Gellenbeck (Xavier) continued his strong summer start by doubling him home. The next inning, Zach Piazza (Wake Forest) singled home two more to build a 4-0 advantage, giving Thomas plenty of room for error. It was breathing room, though, that he didn’t need.
RIVERHEAD 5, SHELTER ISLAND 3
A five-hit, five-run eighth inning was all Riverhead needed to come from behind and hand Shelter Island its first loss at Fiske Field this season.
Forrest Bramlett (Tennessee) led the Tomcats with three hits, including a bases-loaded game-tying single that scored Danny Mendick (UMass-Lowell) in the eighth inning. The Tomcats took the lead and added one more when Hunter Dolshun (UMBC) drew a bases-loaded walk and Colton Rice (Chandler Gilbert CC) followed by reaching on an error.
Jimmy Jack (Loyola Marymount) used one of his two hits in the game to drive in Will Savage (Columbia), who scored two of three Shelter Island runs.
Brenton Arriaga (Loyola Marymount) settled for a no decision after throwing six shutout innings. He surrendered four hits, walked one, and struck out four.
NORTH FORK 7, SOUTHAMPTON 3
After squandering a late lead in their first meeting with Southampton, the Ospreys did well in returning the favor in their rematch. North Fork piled up seven runs on seven hits over the final three innings to score a key road win.
Trailing 3-0 entering the seventh, the Ospreys sliced the deficit to one when Casey Baker (Stony Brook) singled home a pair. Back-to-back bases loaded walks gave them the lead in the eighth, and they put the game away in their final at-bat with three more runs.
Evan Porcella (George Mason) was outstanding in relief for North Fork, pitching 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball to earn his second win this summer. Southampton starter Mark Wilson (St. Peter’s) thrived after a rocky debut, giving up no runs on five hits over six innings.
