After a month of being plagued with injuries, losing players and suffering punishing defeats, the Sag Harbor Whalers rebounded last week picking up more wins than losses in Hamptons Collegiate Baseball, but with the playoffs fast approaching, it was too little too late.
The Whalers beat the league-leading Westhampton Aviators 6-5 in extra innings at Westhampton on Wednesday, and beat the Riverhead Tomcats 5-4 at home on Friday. Sag Harbor went on to lose 8-6 at the hands of the last place Long Island Mustangs in game one of a doubleheader at home on Sunday, then came back to beat the Mustangs 7-3 in game two. A second game against the Tomcats at Riverhead High School was rained out on Tuesday.
As of Monday, the Whalers remained in fifth place, five wins away from even with a 15-20 record. Head coach Scott June said the loss to the Tomcats on Sunday knocked the Whalers out of the playoff hunt.
